In architecture, brutalism refers to a style defined often by a use of raw concrete—breton brut in the French of one of its pioneers, Le Corbusier, and hence its name—in monolithic, imposing large-scale structures. This same word gets applied to a style of lighting that shares a different set of values, finding overlap in perceiving beauty in aggressive forms. Here, torch-cut edges, metallic materials, asymmetry, and a reimagined medievalism create fortresses of light. Confidant is Corbett’s flirtation with brutalist lighting but lacks none of the brand’s usual glamour, with gold leaf glinting off the graphite-black metal for a dramatic look, and a central shade of pure linen making for elegant diffusion effects.
