The Ultimate Bidet Buying Guide
Bidets! Chances are you have seen them before, and if you are anything like me, you are probably terrified of them (side note, I love them now). What are they? Why are they so popular in eastern countries, yet so rarely used in America? This blog post is about everything bidet, why you should use them, and what the benefits are. So lets get started!
What is a bidet?
In short, a bidet is a toilet or toilet seat that replaces toilet paper with water. Modern bidets have an extendable wand that shoots water upwards for the ultimate clean. Some of you are probably wondering whats wrong with toilet paper, it has been around for over 150 years and everything is working just fine. Here is a list of why water is better:
Provides a better clean (rinsing vs smearing)
Cheaper in the long run. Save money on toilet paper.
More gentle. Constant wiping can irritate the skin and worsen certain conditions such as hemorrhoids.
Better for the environment. Americans use 36.5 billion rolls of toilet papers each year or 15 million trees. The manufacturing of 36.5 billion rolls of toilet paper uses half a billion gallons of water and 253,000 tons of chlorine.
Electric bidets come with a wide range of features from increase comfort to a self cleaning function. Keep in mind, more features will cost you more money.
Heated Seat: Most electric bidets come with heated seats. Temperature is usually adjustable.
Water Temperature: Instant adjustable water for a comforting spray. Water pressure is also adjustable.
Self-Cleaning Wand: Some models will have a detachable tip for improved cleanliness. But the wands are self-cleaning and require very little maintenance.
Air Dryer: Adjustable temperature and pressure provides a comfortable drying experience without the need for toilet paper.
Air Deodorizer: A fan inside the toilet bowl circulates air through a filter and removes any unwanted odor. Advanced models will automatically activate when pressure is applied to the seat.
Different Spray Modes: The standard is oscillating and pulsating for the ultimate clean and comfort. More advance models have a wide angle spray designed for females.
Night light: Led lights under the toilet seat provides easy navigation and use during late night trips.
Remote Control: All the bidet functions on a remote control for ease of use and convenience.
Automatic Lids: Sensors detect will you enter the bathroom. Perfect for the elderly and improved cleanliness due to a hands free experience.
Self Cleaning / Sterilizing Bowl: Toto models mist the bowl with ionized water before and after each use. Higher end models have UV light to help decompose micro particles.
Prior to purchasing your bidet, there are three things you must check for compatibility.
Make sure there is enough distance between the mounting holes and water tank. Typically this area must be flat. Imagine the toilet as two separate pieces, the corner where the toilet bowl and water tank connects is usually L shaped, or 90 degrees.
Measure the distance between the two mounting holes on the toilet to ensure they are within the manufacture specified range.
Measure from the mounting holes to the end of the toilet bowl. This will tell you if you need an elongated or round shape bidet.
